I want to talk about this poster for a second. I’m sure several of you have seen it already today, I’ve seen it several times on my dash.
All the Rape, No Subtitles is an accurate description of the movie. That’s what happened.
Here’s the joke in this poster: Look we sensationalized rape again! Another movie that turns rape into entertainment! Haha, we remade the Swedish films and just took out the subtitles, have some rape for your enjoyment.
Hopefully now that I’ve put it in those terms you can see what a problem this poster is. But, if not, let me break it down for you. It’s simple: you just turned rape into the punchline of a joke.
Rape is NOT funny.
It’s not funny for the survivors in any way shape or form.
This poster is not funny for anyone who sat through this movie, trying not to have a panic attack from how graphic it was. It’s not funny for anyone who chose not to see the movie in order to avoid being triggered. It’s not funny for anyone who held hands with someone through that scene and still had to get up and leave to throw up.
Basically, it’s just not funny. Because it’s laughing about how rape is such an excellent form of entertainment, it got Oscar nominated.
And the fact I’ve seen it several times on my dash, is utterly disappointing. I know it’s in a collection of posters, but the fact that THIS poster is being spread around is continuing the idea that rape is considered a joke, and an excellent form of entertainment. Whether or not it’s with a collection of others, it’s still there. People are still laughing at it. For some, this is the funniest poster of the lot. Disappointing, indeed.
I’ve seen all of the movies (Swedish and the American) multiple times and have read all of the books (I’m almost finished with the last one), and I still can’t watch that rape scene without cringing and looking away at some points. Also might I just point out that the movie isn’t ALL rape. Yes there are a lot of cases of sexual assault, however, there is a lot more to the story, such as: getting passed horrific trauma, solving a murder mystery, coming to terms with oneself, and many other things that make these characters more than rape victims. Lisbeth was the victim, but overcame that and got revenge and lived her life…she didn’t let it control her, and she didn’t let it ruin her. I feel like she’s kind of a role model that way. If you read the books and really pay attention to the story line in the films you know right away that this woman is not going to settle for being the victim. She is a hardcore badass and I admire her…I probably wouldn’t have that personal strength, and don’t forget that she struggles with her personal strength in many ways as well throughout the whole trilogy. This poster is stupid.

This is precisely why I didn’t reblog that set of posters earlier. This one is not funny. At all.
